The whole Sound Creation line has gone through various changes throughout the years. Some Gongs have changed size, some have seen changes to the profile/hammering.

I performed a full concert on just Gongs/Bells/Singing Bowls/Sound Plates/Cymbals etc. in a beautiful old church yesterday. The sound was wonderful. I played my own compositions and a few improvisations. Much fun despite the hectic set up.

Here is my full set up for the day:

GONG EVENTS / The Experience of INUKSUIT
« on: September 14, 2013, 12:52:30 am »
On Saturday, September 7, I was involved in a presentation of composer John Luther Adams' monumental piece, INUKSUIT. This is written for 99 percussionists and is meant to be performed outside. We performed it at a 40 acre sculpture garden here in Milwaukee. The percussionists came from all over, most from Universities and high schools, with a few of us professionals. INUKSUIT has 3 groups of performers: -conch, siren, triangle; 2-shakers/rattles, drums, cymbal; and 3-Gong, cymbals, glockenspiel. I chose to be in group 3 and used a 32" SC Earth Gong, with 7 different Paiste cymbals from 10" - 21".

After surviving torrential rain early in the day, the skies cleared up and we put on an amazing 80 minute performance. There was a very large and appreciative audience. The main thing I like about the piece is that it removes the barrier between performer & audience. At times, I had people literally in my face while I played. Quite an experience.

You can read my blog all about it here:http://percussiondeconstruction.blogspot.com/2013/09/the-experience-of-inuksuit.html There are more photos and links to 2 reviews and 2 videos on YouTube.

ACCENT & DECO GONGS / Rare 10" Accent/Deco Gong
« on: August 22, 2013, 02:54:02 am »
This is a rare Gong that I own. It's a 10" Paiste Accent/deco Gong. The age is unknown.

1 - It's actually made like a small Symphonic Gong, with the vertical etching lines on the face. Neither of today’s Accent or deco Gongs have the face etching.

2 - It is stamped on the face, "Swiss Made." I've never seen another Paiste Gong stamped this way, as their Gongs are all made at their factory in Germany.

3 - It also sounds very different from my other Accent & Deco Gongs. The sound opens up more, and it has a very low pitch.

I also have a 13" one that looks exactly the same, but is not stamped as to where it was made.

SOUND CREATION GONGS / Re: What sound creation gongs do you own?

Thanks for sharing this with us, Michael. Do you know which of the Paiste gong makerswas involved with its development?

No, not really. There's no serial # and I don't know it's exact age. I've had it for maybe 6 years, but I don't know how long it was sitting at the Swiss HQ/warehouse before it made its way over to me.

I'm intruiged with the Prototype 'Air' gong, Michael. Any further information?

GONG OF THE WEEK: An extremely rare Gong. This is a prototype Paiste Sound Creation Gong. It's a 26" Sky/Air Gong. It started out as possibly an Earth Gong (it has the 3-point mounting holes with rubber grommets like the Earth Gongs), but was re-hammered multiple times. The result is a much more sensitive Gong with a higher overall pitch than the Earth. It's a lot like a Wind Gong. I have to be careful with it because it is so responsive.

The story behind this, is that I asked a friend in Paiste Sound Development, who is also a fellow sound freak, if they had any “weird stuff” hidden in the corners of the factory/warehouse. He looked around and came up with this. I’m very thankful to have gotten it.

Extensive overhammering

Hammering on top of logo on the back, with hand painting to redo the logo.

SOUND CREATION GONGS / Re: My favourite Sound Creation Gong 60"
« on: July 24, 2013, 05:47:11 am »
It's funny, I played one 60" Earth that did absolutely nothing for me. Then I played a different one that I would've bought on the spot. Just a fantastic sounding Gong.

A photo of my set up from last night's Sacred Sound Workshop & Meditation Session in Chicago. I presented an hour long workshop on meditation & sound healing with Bells, Singing Bowls, Ting-sha, and of course, Gongs. Then after a break, I presented an hour long Gong Meditation Session. It was well attended and the people were really attentive.

In the photo, Top row L-R: 24" SC Water, 32" Symphonic. 32" SC Earth, 24" Planet Venus. Bottom row: 28" Planet Jupiter, 8" Antique Kyeezee, 22" Accent. Additional Gongs on the floor: 16" Chau, 16" Wind, 13" Paiste Accent, 15" Tibetan Bossed, 14" Michael Paiste Volcano (leaning on stand); along with Ting-Sha, a Ring Gong, and 5 Singing Bowls in front.
